Kariz: A Nostalgic Desert-inspired Flower Pot

Bringing Traditional Life to the Present

Kariz draws inspiration from the traditional life of Iran, specifically the ancient Kariz systems that have been used for over 2500 years to obtain water for agriculture. These underground waterways or canals have become an integral part of the country's cultural heritage. By incorporating the concept of Kariz into a flower pot, Ghaffari pays homage to this rich history and brings it into the present.

What sets Kariz apart from other flower pots is its unique irrigation system. By utilizing a common tank, multiple pots can be connected to a single water source, providing a practical solution for watering plants. This design not only simplifies the irrigation process but also adds a touch of elegance to any indoor or outdoor space.

The realization of Kariz posed several challenges for Ghaffari. The choice of materials and construction had to be carefully considered to ensure the final dimensions and weight of the pot were suitable. After extensive research and experimentation, the designer successfully created a functional and visually appealing product.

Measuring 50 cm in length, 30 cm in width, and 30 cm in height, Kariz is a versatile flower pot that can accommodate a variety of plants. Its ergonomic design and sensory approach make it a delight to interact with, evoking a sense of nostalgia and connection to nature.

Designed in 2021 in Tehran, Ghaffari's exploration of Iran's natural environment and cultural heritage influenced the creation of Kariz. The result is a design that not only serves a practical purpose but also tells a story and sparks emotions.

Kariz has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Furniture Design Award in 2022, a prestigious accolade that celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. This recognition highlights the technical and creative skills employed in the creation of Kariz.

With Kariz, Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini Ghaffari has successfully merged art, design, and functionality. This flower pot not only adds beauty to any space but also serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Iran and the importance of sustainable irrigation practices.
